Students in the CBRM return to school tomorrow, and Cape Breton Regional Police ask motorists to drive with extra caution.

Police remind motorists to obey directions of crossing guards, be aware of extra pedestrian and vehicle traffic in and around school areas and pay attention to school bus signals as students are picked up and dropped off. Motorists should also prepare for potential delays in traffic flow before and after school hours.

During the month of September, the Traffic Safety Unit will focus its enforcement on crosswalks, school zone speed and school bus signals, to ensure the safety of school children. Motorists are reminded of the following:

  • Failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk is dangerous and can result in fines starting at $164.50.
  • Drivers must stop for a school bus that is displaying its flashing alternating red lights, whether they are driving behind the bus or toward the bus in the opposing lane. The penalty for passing a school bus illegally is 6 points against the license and a fine starting at $394.50.
  • Speed fines double in school zones – where drivers are limited to 50 km/hour during school hours – starting at $455.21 for a first offence.

The Cape Breton Regional Police thank motorists for doing their part to help to make CBRM streets safe for children and youth in our communites.
