Cape Breton Regional Police made multiple arrests and conducted 5 searches across the CBRM this morning as the result of an undercover drug operation.

Police announced the results of Operation Summer Slam 2010 today, targeted to shut down the illegal sale of drugs on the streets of the CBRM. The summer operation led to a total of 104 charges against 43 individuals for Trafficking in controlled and illegal substances, including morphine, oxycodone, hydromorphone, cocaine and marijuana. Eleven of these individuals face an additional 49 charges for Breach of Undertaking and 18 charges for Breach of Probation. Drugs were purchased in small amounts by undercover Cape Breton Regional Police Officers, over the course of the last two months.

“This is another significant step towards safer communities, disrupting the illegal activities of well-known dealers, users and repeat offenders and removing more illegal drugs from our streets,” said Cape Breton Regional Police Chief Myles Burke. “We’ve heard concerns from citizens and the business community, we’ve received numerous tips through CrimeStoppers and we’re taking action to send a direct message to drug dealers that we will not tolerate this type of activity in the CBRM.”

Operation Summer Slam follows the success of three previous undercover drug operations in the CBRM – Operation Bay Sweep (2008), Operation Night Rider (2009), and Operation H-Tactic earlier this month. Prescription drugs accounted for approximately 90 per cent of the charges laid in Operation Summer Slam.

The 14 Individuals arrested this morning will all be processed through the Provincial Court system today. Additional arrests are ongoing.

The attached backgrounder details all individuals facing charges in connection with this operation.
