On Thursday, August 26, 2010, officers will partner with the communities of Scotia Court and North End Dartmouth to offer HRP Sports Pals, a one-day soccer camp for youth in the area.

Approximately ten officers will teach soccer skills and drills to 25 youth on the soccer pitch at Harbourview Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the day culminating in a fun-filled soccer match. The participating youth were selected by the Community Response Officers who work in Scotia Court and North End Dartmouth.

HRP Sports Pals is the brainchild of Constable Dwight Hennigar who believes that police officers have many strengths and skills which they can share with the community, particularly youth who may not have the same opportunities as others. This initiative is also part of HRM’s Public Safety Strategy which aims to address the root causes of crime and enhance community safety. If successful, the plan is to offer HRP Sports Pals programs to other communities in HRM next year.

Special thanks to our community partners for making Sports Pals possible, including Reverend Gavin McCombie of First Baptist Church in Dartmouth who is providing lunch for the participants, Quaker Tropicana Gatorade which is supplying refreshments, and Dollarama which is donating water and snacks.
